The advantages of improved defect detection, enhanced sizing capability and reduced inspection times offered by phased array ultrasonic techniques over conventional ultrasonic techniques are well recognised. Recognising the increasing use of portable units for on-site testing, TWI has recently purchased eight Harfang X-32 units from Sonatest Ltd. This is in response to the need of personnel using this equipment to be properly trained and qualified to a recognised standard. In this regard, and building upon programmes conducted for TWI Industrial Member companies starting on 31 July 2006, TWI Training & Examination Services will be offering worldwide a two-week training programme aimed specifically at butt weld inspection and an internationally recognised certification.
