IG reveals $2.2B price tag for DOD's network defense consolidation effort

A new inspector general audit has found the Defense Department expects to have spent $2.2 billion by fiscal year 2023 deploying Joint Regional Security Stacks to consolidate network defenses across the military, and the IG recommends the Pentagon get a better handle on the capabilities it requires for JRSS. The DOD IG audit released today, a redacted version of a June 4 "for official use only" document, provides new information on the cost, management and performance of the JRSS effort. JRSS is a part of the Joint Information Environment concept initiated in 2010 to consolidate DOD's information technology environment into a single security architecture. The joint stacks centralize security equipment like network routers, firewalls and switches into regional architectures, rather than having such equipment individually deployed by every base, camp or station. DOD plans to replace more than 1,000 local security stacks with 23 Non-Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNET) JRSS and 25 Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET) JRSS. As of March, the Defense Informs tion Systems Agency had deployed 13 of the NIPRNET JRSS, with plans to deploy the remaining 10 stacks by October. The agency has not deployed any SIPRNET stacks yet, according to the audit.
