The Missile Defense Agency has awarded Lockheed Martin a $1.4 billion contract for production of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense interceptors on behalf of Saudi Arabia, a major down payment toward a planned $15 billion acquisition by the desert kingdom of seven THAAD batteries. On July 19, MDA obligated $340 million on behalf of Riyadh to Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Dallas, TX, as part of a $1.4 billion firm-fixed-price contract modification that allows the Saudis to piggyback on a U.S. production contract. In total, the U.S. government approved a sale to Saudi Arabia of 44 THAAD launchers, 360 THAAD interceptor missiles, 16 THAAD Fire Control and Communications Mobile Tactical Station Groups, and seven AN/TPY-2 THAAD radars. The THAAD radars are built by Raytheon.
