The myriad of challenges confronting the United States and Japan in Asia require both countries to reform the structure of their security alliance, especially in light of the "challenge emanating from China," according to a Center for a New American Security report set to be released this Friday.rnThe U.S.-Japan alliance was created during the U.S. occupation after World War II, and is a cornerstone of the U.S. military's posture in Asia. More than 50,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Japan and have the exclusive use of 89 facilities throughout the country, according to a Congressional Research Service report.
