Intel Agency Seeks Technologies To Enable Silent UAV Flight

The U.S. intelligence community is seeking proposals for technologies that could allow unmanned aircraft to swap out gasoline and diesel engines for yet-to-be-developed power and propulsion packages designed to improve endurance and reduce engine noise. On Oct. 5, the Office of Smart Collection in the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency kicked off the "Great Horned Owl" program, a four-year effort to "enable quieter" unmanned aerial vehicles through innovations in both power production and motor propulsion.
