摘要

While the services have been able to fulfill the needs of U.S. Central Command, which oversees operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, doing so has prevented the Defense Department from fully meeting the requirements of the other combatant commands, senior service officials told Congress July 26. In addition, those senior officials acknowledged that cutting $400 billion from the defense budget would be a challenge, saying cuts above that level would require "fundamental" changes to the American military structure. Speaking to the House Armed Services readiness subcommittee this week, the three service vice chiefs of staff- Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, Navy Adm. Jonathan Greenert and Army Gen. Peter Chiarelli, who appeared along with Marine Corps Assistant Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford ~ said their departments are only barely able to keep pace with current operations and supply CENTCOM with all the forces it requires.
