CBO: Pentagon Requirements Exceed Near- And Far-Term Budget Plans

The Defense Department's five-year planning blueprint is $64 billion shy of what DOD needs to keep pace with recent rising trends in costs for weapons systems, health care services and operations and support activities, a 2 percent hole in the Pentagon's projected $2.8 trillion spending plan, a senior congressional budget analyst said July 7. David Mosher, Congressional Budget Office assistant director for national security, told the House Budget Committee that historical cost growth is likely to drive the Pentagon budget ever higher in the coming decades "in an era of increasing pressure on the federal budget."
