DOD R&D Fund Revamped To Add Focus On Near-Term Irregular Warfare

The Pentagon's fiscal year 2012 budget request seeks to revamp a key research and development account by increasing funds for rapidly fielding near-term irregular warfare capabilities. The budget request would scrap the head of defense research and engineering's old "force transformation" fund and replace it with a new "emerging capabilities technology development" account with millions more dollars over in the FY-12 to FY-16 period and an added emphasis on fielding technology sooner, according to budget justification documents released last week. The fund is overseen by the directorate's Rapid Reaction Technology Office.
