摘要

Defense Secretary Robert Gates' plans to consolidate redundant intelligence programs within the Pentagon have been a long time coming, according to former intelligence officials and a congressional source.rnGates discussed consolidating the Defense Department's intelligence organizations, including an arrangement that would "surge intelligence support" from the Defense Intelligence Agency during a Jan. 6 press briefing. He told reporters that DOD had been in consultation with the director of national intelligence to examine the Pentagon's "sprawling intelligence apparatus."rn"Based on this review, I have approved a number of changes. They include downsizing the new intelligence organizations that have grown up around a number of the combatant commands in recent years, most of which are not directly engaged in the post-[Sept. 11] military conflicts," Gates said.
