Carter: DOD Will Plan For Steep Cuts In Long-Term Budget

Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter issued guidance last week formally directing military officials to prepare spending blueprints for fiscal years 2014,2015 and beyond that include reductions of up to 10 percent. Carter's May 29 memo to service leaders, senior defense officials and U.S. Special Operations Command - titled "Strategic Choices and Management Review - End State" - dovetails with White House guidance issued the same day and follows a recent effort in the review to enable service leaders to develop their own proposed cuts for achieving the savings required by sequestration.
