As the Pentagon wrestles with fiscal challenges, it will likely seek to protect investments aimed at expanding secure mobile communications, a senior National Security Agency official said. Rob Joyce, NSA's deputy director for information assurance, said the department is working to address an "unmet gap" in secure mobility, partly through the expansion of a pilot program that enables officials to exchange classified information on hardened commercial smartphones.
