President Obama has nominated Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford to be the service's next commandant, according to a Pentagon statement issued last week. Dunford would succeed the current commandant, Gen. James Amos. Dunford is serving as head of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan; he is also commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan. He was the Marine Corps' assistant commandant from October 2010 to December 2012, according to his official biography. While he was assistant commandant, Dunford was a major advocate of making high water speed a requirement for the new Amphibious Combat Vehicle program. While some argued the capability was needed, others warned it would render the system unaffordable like its predecessor, the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, service and industry sources told Inside the Pentagon in November 2012.
