Army sustainment and logistics operations must adapt to serve a leaner and more agile force, which will be no easy task, according to the service's vice chief of staff. "By 2025, we will have a leaner, more lethal, expeditionary and agile force that maintains an overmatch over our increasingly capable opponents," Gen. John Campbell said at a May 20 Association of the United States Army conference focused on sustaining the force of 2025. Regionally aligned forces "will increase our worldwide reach and will bring in additional daunting logistics challenges in the future as we move forward," he added. While 90 percent of the force will be based in the continental United States following the war in Afghanistan, the service needs to be able to "sustain and maintain regionally aligned forces across the globe," according to Campbell. The Army faces challenges as it prepares to transition to a post-war environment, Campbell added. "That is going to be based on reduced workload in our depots, reduced funding and a loss of critical skill sets in our depots."
