U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. Southern Command will not be sponsoring the USNS Sumner, intended to be used as a partner platform for counter-narcotics efforts, humanitarian assistance and security force assistance, according to Col. Greg Julian, public affairs chief at SOUTHCOM. Instead, a contract will be awarded to deactivate the Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship, which has been operational since 1997, said Jillian Morris, deputy director of public affairs at Military Sealift Command.
