DOD Inspector General To Audit JTRS Manpack And Rifleman Programs

The Pentagon's inspector general has launched an audit of the Army's Joint Tactical Radio Systems' handheld Rifleman and Manpack radios - programs that historically have been rife with performance issues, cost overruns and delays. "Our objective is to determine whether the Army is effectively managing the acquisition and testing programs for the Joint Tactical Radio System Handheld, Manpack, and Small Form Fit Rifleman and Manpack radios to make sure they meet warfighter needs," Jacqueline Wicecarver, assistant IG for acquisition, parts and inventory, wrote in a Jan. 14 memo to Defense Department acquisition chief Frank Kendall. "Specifically, we plan to conduct a series of audits to review requirements development, the acquisition strategy, and testing."
