Kendall Praises Services Contractors As DOD Meets Small Business Goals

The Pentagon was given an "A" grade on Friday by the U.S. Small Business Administration for awarding $53.3 billion in fiscal year 2014 prime contracts to small businesses ~ more than half of the federal government's total for FY-14. Frank Kendall, the Pentagon's acquisition chief, praised the role services contracts played in reaching the Defense Department's goals. "The department doesn't encourage the use of small businesses just because we like small businesses," he said during a Pentagon press conference. "We do it for very practical reasons," he continued. "One of the greatest engines for innovation in this country is small businesses. Small businesses, particularly in the services industry, tend to be leaner, more anxious to get work and thus tend to be more economic in many cases for the department."
