The Pentagon is turning to the Defense Science Board, an influential scientific advisory panel, for help in addressing the looming affordability challenge posed by recapitalizing the nuclear triad, specifically focusing on existing modernization plans and force mix, according to a recent memo. "The Defense Department is confronting the problem of the need to recapitalize the strategic deterrent. This financial burden is on the order of $10 to $15 billion per year starting in about 2022," Frank Kendall, the Pentagon's acquisition chief, wrote in a Nov. 14 memo to the DSB.
