The Pentagon believes North Korea could field as soon as 2020 a mobile long-range, nuclear-armed missile capable of hitting targets anywhere in the United States including Washington and New York, a senior military official said in what appears to be the first public assessment linking a date to the projected operational capability of a North Korean road-mobile, intercontinental ballistic missile. Missile Defense Agency Director Vice Adm. James Syring told the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee April 13 that the U.S. government assesses Pyongyang could field the new weapon system - which North Korea first paraded in 2012 but has not yet operationally tested - by the end of the decade.
