DOD issues 'do not buy' software list aimed at Russia-, China-linked firms

The Pentagon has issued a "do not buy" list of software to its acquisition workforce with the goal of ensuring no software linked to Russia or China is used in Defense Department systems and the defense supply chain. Ellen Lord, the under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment, said the Pentagon began putting the list together "in earnest" six months ago with the help of the intelligence community. "What we're doing is making sure that we do not buy software that's Russian or Chinese provenance, for instance, and quite often that's difficult to tell at first glance because of holding companies," Lord said during a July 27 roundtable with reporters at the Pentagon.
