Rear Adm. Brian Corey, the program executive officer for unmanned and weapons, said today the Navy intends to operate unmanned aircraft in "more congested airspace" as the service looks to expand and execute its unmanned campaign framework. That's why, Corey said, features like sense and avoid and autonomous landing and takeoff will be critical. He spoke at an event hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. The unmanned campaign framework charts a vision for the Navy to integrate unmanned platforms into the fleet at scale.Unmanned helicopters, for instance, are one "clear" demand, Corey said. While a manned helicopter can navigate and land in any "landing zone" ~ be it a clearing in a jungle or an open farm field ~ in order to deliver cargo or complete a mission, an unmanned helicopter is not vet able to perform such a task.
