NAVAIR chief: NGAD cannot take as long as F-35 development

The Naval Air Systems Command chief said yesterday the service cannot afford to take as long to develop its sixth-generation fighter aircraft as it did the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Vice Adm. Dean Peters told attendees at the West 2020 conference here that while the type of platform will affect the time line for the Next Generation Air Dominance development, the Navy is still eyeing the 2030s. "Some of it is budget dependent, but again some of it really is the approach that's taken. But we haven't started in earnest on that program yet. So will it take as long as the F-35? I don't think so," Peters said.
