Mexico starts power market in Baja, mainland;rnquestions remain on ultimate success

Mexico last week began the partial roll-out of its day-ahead wholesalernmarket with prices for the northern Baja Peninsula and the Mexicanrnmainland.rnCentro Nacional de Control de Energia published day-ahead numbersrnfor the Baja California region, which covers only the northern end of thernBaja Peninsula on Mexico’s West Coast, at about 8:30 pm CST Januaryrn26 for delivery on January 27. On January 28, CENACE published pricesrnfor the mainland at about 2:30 pm CST for delivery January 29.rnThe only remaining part of Mexico for which day-ahead trading hasrnnot yet started is the Baja California Sur region, at the southern end ofrnthe peninsula, where trading is slated to start around February 10.rnOn the first day of trading for the northern end of the Baja Peninsula,rnthe average price was 354.69 pesos/MWh, which at the Banco de Mexicornexchange rate of 18.47 pesos to the dollar equates to $19.20/MWh. Thernhours from 7 am to 10 pm, which would in the US be considered peakrntime, had an average price of 341.32 pesos/MWh, or $18.48/MWh, whilernthe remaining hours had an average of 376.97 pesos/MWh, or $20.41/rnMWh.
