Onsite Grey Water Recycling System

Grey water is generated domestically and comprises of water from the shower and laundry areas, washbasins, and sometimes kitchen water too. Reclamation and reuse of such water is possible with treatment by biological or physical means. The advantage of treating grey water biologically is that it stabilizes the organic matter that otherwise may cause problems such as odor, surface water and soil contamination, sites for mosquito breeding and so on. Stabilization of grey water can be achieved by using constructed wetlands (CWs), which apply long hydraulic-retention time (HRT) or membrane filtration bioreactors that apply short HRT. A major drawback associated with CWs is that they require large areas, and with membrane filtration bioreactors, high energy and maintenance. Application of onsite treatment for reuse of grey water is an attractive option for tropical countries with low precipitation.
