Status of Indian Paper Industry - Contribution of Agro Based Paper Mills

Paper industry has recently come in focus when impact of high use of plastic for packaging and other purposes and its adverse impact on environment was understood by the society world over. Paper is being considered a suitable substitute for many end uses, especially for packaging both for industrial purposes and also for food grade packaging. It was generally perceived that paper industry is a major cause of deforestation and also causes environmental issues because of pollution caused by both liquid and gaseous emissions. It is gradually being understood by people that world over paper industry is planting more trees than it actually uses, which is also established by the fact that forest cover in areas where paper industry is located has gone up rather than coming down. Significant improvement in resource utilization, process upgradation and end-of-pipe treatment has minimized the impact on environment due to strict compliance by paper industry of all environmental laws. Sustainability of paper industry is being recognized due to the fact that both the input raw materials as well as the end product are eco-friendly and sustainable and would survive till the end.
