New review sheds light on the different estrogenic profiles of phytoestrogens

Arecently published review, completed by researchers from Frutarom and Wageningen University, The Netherlands, provides a greater understanding of how different phytoestrogens have unique estrogenic profiles. The publication, a review published in the June 2012 issue of the journal Food and Function, covers three decades of research. It focuses on the mechanisms that cause phytoestrogens to act as either agonist (estrogen) or as antagonist (anti-estrogen) towards the estrogen receptors in the human body. The review also summarizes new findings on the dietary occurrence, bioavailability and metabolism of phytoestrogens.
