INCLUSIVE DESIGN 3.0: BROADENING THE GOALS OF INCLUSIVITY IN DESIGN EDUCATION

I have been teaching design history for over three decades. The course content has continued to evolve in breadth and depth. I started with the Industrial Revolution and the London Exhibition of 1851, and in later courses expanded further back in history. Recent events have informed part of the evolution. Last summer I prepared to teach a new history course for the upcoming fall semester. It is oriented to first-year students in the School of Design in the College of DAAP at the University of Cincinnati. It was an opportunity to rethink how design students could learn art and design history given the undeniable truths that have emerged in the world.
