Frank J Rauscher III became intrigued with science at an early age. When other children were climbing trees and playing ball, he would listen in awe to scientists who met at his home to discuss their research. At the time, Rauscher's father, Frank J Rauscher, Jr, was director of the National Cancer Institute and the first director of the National Cancer Program in the United States. Young Rauscher went on to pursue a career in research. While working in a chemotherapy clinic where doctors pumped patients with toxic drugs in an attempt to kill cancer cells, he became convinced that targeted therapy held the key in the fight against the dreaded disease without painful side effects.
