Water plays a vital role in the proper functioning of the Earth's ecosystems. However, many different sources contribute to water pollution, including industrial drainage, agricultural irrigation, and urban waste. Pollution has become a subject of great concern worldwide because of its capacity to harm all living creatures. Thus, analysis of potentially hazardous compounds in water is critical, and such work has increasingly been attracting attention. Capillary electrophoresis (CE), thanks to its automation, speed, high separation efficiency, and small sample and reagent requirements, has proved a powerful technique for environmental analysis. With further improvements in instrumental design and separation strategies, CE now offers excellent resolution, sensitivity, and versatility for water analysis. Figure 1 shows the smallest automated CE system in the world developed by CE Resources Singapore Pte Ltd, a spin-off company from the National University of Singapore (NUS).
