S'pore Prof Received Draper Prize, Engineering's Top Honor

Prof Rachid Yazami, one of the rechargeable battery pioneers who laid the groundwork for today's lithium-ion battery, was presented with engineering's highest honor on 18 February 2014 by the Washington-based National Academy of Engineering. The Cheng Tsang Man Chair Professor in Energy at the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has become the first Singapore resident to win the prestigious Draper prize for his work on making lithium-ion batteries safely rechargeable. "It's been the most incredible one week of my life," said the professor, who is also director of Battery Programs at NTU's Energy Research Institute. "I didn't know how important this was until I found out how people were reacting to it," he laughed.
