The World in Your Consulting Room

摘要

GPs working in the UK need travel no further than their consulting room to see the world. This article aims to highlight some of the rewards and challenges of working in a multicultural society, with a view to helping facilitate high standards of patient care. This article shall first consider population trends and representations of immigration in the UK. It will then discuss some practical aspects of arrival, departure and the use of interpreters within the National Health Service (NHS). Case studies will be used to highlight key learning throughout. It is hoped that consultations in general practice, when looked at with an international gaze, will provide a glimpse into a much wider world than the four walls within which they occur.
