I've come to realize that I'm an outlier in terms of job stability. In my 28-year career I've had only three jobs: 11 years at Arthur Andersen, 11 years at Oracle, and seven years at my current company. This seems quite normal to me. My father also had three jobs in his whole career, including 20 years at Sears. My grandfather retired after 40 odd years at Nashua Corporation, a cardboard and paper manufacturer in New Hampshire. Commit your career to your company and it'll take care of you for life. Right? Not even close. Offshoring has changed all that, as companies find new ways to do more with less.
