Ibm's decision to give open source developers unencumbered access to 500 of the company's 40,000 patents has been greeted with cautious optimism by some of the open source developers it was intended to help. Developers who welcomed the gesture also criticized the practice of creating software patents, a form of IP (intellectual property) they generally oppose.
