Not too long ago, IT managers and server vendors talked about Unix servers replacing mainframes. Today, they measure high-end servers by how close they come to matching the features and management capabilities of mainframes. "I see the server vendors emulating many of the mainframe's technologies," says Tim Lindler, VP of information technology operations at First Union Corp. in Charlotte, N.C. "It's where all the vendors are going and where they all want to go."
