Availability and performance aspects for mainframe consolidated servers

Many people think that the mainframe platform now a days suffering from slow but a definite death. But this is a common misconception. The mainframe is alive and going well. This paper will help to recognize the mainframe platform's main qualities and its new driving forces like Server strengthening which is based on the z/VM operating system and Linux. Some of efforts are firstly made to provide a fundamental understanding of the IBM mainframe architecture in order to setup a common ground. z/VM based virtualization provides an insight that how resources can be shared between processes. This report also introduces some of the most essential issues, which are set separated mainframe Linux from Linux on other mainframe platforms. Some Performance tests have been carried out, and through which an insight into the systems behavior can be achieved. This paper also includes some initial considerations on monitoring of the software for the virtual server environment on the mainframe platform.
