A colleague who monitors the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for current awareness assures me there is plenty of money flowing out of its coffers. The problem is that the money isn't getting channeled directly to such critical places as firehouses, which-according to numerous media reports-appear to be both understaffed and underequipped. As my colleague pointed out, there seems to be money available for sophisticated technology, but when it comes to hiring and training more personnel at the local level ... well, do a simple Google search and see how many local governments are closing firehouses.
