Ehrich Weiss was a skeptic. Better known as Harry Hou-dini, he was famous during the early 20th century not only for escaping from handcuffs and strait-jackets but also for debunking the claims of mediums and psychics. He even visited seances in disguise so he could reveal the charlatans' tricks. Concerned that they would pretend to communicate with him after his death, Houdini left his wife, Bess, a secret code that consisted of words chosen at random from a letter. Bess began holding yearly seances on Halloween after his death in 1926, but she never received the secret code.
