When I was getting ready to put the premiere issue of Information Today to bed in November 1983,I decided to write a story titled "Why a newspaper?" Here's how it started: As I was putting my thoughts together for this little piece, for some reason I remembered something my grandfather had said to me when I was a teenager. He came to the U.S. at the age of 29-rather late for a single man to emigrate I had always thought. He worked his way over as a fireman on a steamship, and I often pictured his broad Norwegian back as he shoveled coal into a fiery ship's furnace. A man of few words, he spoke with a heavy Scandinavian accent until he died in his seventies. Why had he decided-a man nearly thirty-to leave his comfortable and familiar surroundings and set out for a strange and frightening new land?
