As ProQuest and Dialog settle in together after the acquisition, changes in senior management were designed and implemented to ease the transition. Among those changes is Suzanne BeDell's transfer from senior vice president of Pro-Quest to general manager of Dialog. "Dialog is a separate business unit within Pro-Quest because it is big enough and specialized enough to be a discrete unit with its own strategies, objectives and control over the resources that affect company performance," says BeDell. "We set it up this way to be laser-focused on investing in and growing the business." BeDell spent many years in publishing, holding positions at ProQuest, Thomson, Mosby, and McGraw-Hill. She joined ProQuest in 2001 as vice president and publisher and was promoted to senior vice president, responsible for managing the company's Higher Education Publishing area. In her new post, BeDell is managing the company's financial performance as well as establishing and implementing its business strategy. Her strategy for aggregation, which is often handled by a distinct department within a company because of its complexities, is mirrored after ProQuest's approach. "At ProQuest, we have tried to take a holistic view of product development and management, creating products that add real value to the research process and can be easily differentiated from the free web," she says. "Good new products drive revenue and revenue drives investment. We will work to achieve this at Dialog."
