Invisible Web or Just an Invisible Information Industry?

Back when I was a pup, all the way back to my days in library school, the teacher who taught reference work turned to one source and one source alone as her bible. And in my decades as a working reference librarian in a traditional (though hardly hidebound) environment, a copy of that bible sat on the shelf, waiting to offer guidance for any crisis. And if I visited another library's reference operation, I only had to peek around the shelves to find its copy of this bible, which waited to guide its librarians to the light too.
