Necessity Is the Mother of Invention: The 29th Charleston Conference

When Katina Strauch invited some colleagues to meet at South Carolina's College of Charleston for a discussion of issues re-rnlating to collection development and acquisitions in 1980, about 20 people responded. From those small beginnings, the Charleston Conference continued to grow and nowrnroutinely draws about 1,000 attendees. The fact that the 2009 conference (held Nov. 4-7) maintained this attendance level even in these challenging economic times is a tribute to the ability of Strauch and her conference directors to recruit expert speakers.
