For any legal team, e-discovery is much the same as looking for a needle in a haystack. Legal professionals comb through documents in search of critical data that can make or break a case. But this deep dive into structured and unstructured data can be as costly as it is time-intensive. Andy Kraftsow, chief scientist at RenewData, says one of the biggest trends in e-discovery is cost. In the past 10-15 years, the cost of collecting data has gone from about $6,000 per gigabyte to $150 per gigabyte, which translates to about 5 cents a document, he says. "While this is a huge drop, we're now working with data that has increased to the equivalent of 2.5 War and Peace novels of email per day."
