U.S. Moving to End Its Role in Internet Oversight by 2015

On March 14, the U.S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced its intention to "transition key internet domain name functions to the global multi-stakeholder community" (1.usa.gov/ ld33FkM). The announcement is actually a decision made years ago to take internet functionality and management out of the hands of any governmental entity. However, it led to a firestorm of controversy in a time of global political uncertainty.
