The Research Programs of the IMLS

This editorial is a brief introduction to a few of the research programmes supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, IMLS, as this issue of IRWI contains many examples of projects funded under these schemes. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the USA's 122 000 libraries and 17 500 museums, and its mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. It supports the full range of museums, including art, history, science and technology, children's, natural history, historic houses, nature centres, botanical gardens and zoos; and all types of libraries, including public, school, academic, research and archival. The Institute works at the national level and in coordination with state and local institutions and organizations to sustain heritage, culture and knowledge; enhance learning and innovation; and support professional development.
