Digital Preservation Strategies

As information in a digital rather than an analogue format becomes more and more commonplace, strategies for its effective management, including preservation and access, become ever more important - and more complex. A year ago in Information Management Report (July 2002) I wrote about some of the new initiatives in digital preservation (DP). In the UK a major focus for DP continues to be the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC). The Coalition has organized and sponsored a number of meetings and seminars in the past year, but its major achievement, I think, is the loading onto its web site of an online edition of Preservation Management of Digital Materials: a Handbook, by Maggie Jones and Neil Beagrie. This valuable work is now maintained and updated by the DPC.
