摘要

Each year in China, hundreds of books on journalism, communication, and media studies hit the shelves. At least half of them are translated from foreign languages, particularly English. Of the remaining, many deal with topics such as press history that are of almost exclusive Chinese interests, using approaches closer to the humanities than social sciences. Only a small number are original work based on empirical evidence, attempting to address theoretical issues of global relevance, engaging in contemporary debates on media and society, cultural policy, democracy, and economic development. Of these few, Communication and Society stands out as a unique volume in recent years given its scope and depth, its originality and rigor.
