Good engineering involves the process of optimizing the interaction of all the variables involved in a given device or process. In a simple toy a few variables such as the choice of material, the price point, performance, safety, shipping cost and methods of assembly of a few parts may be involved, but in a complex product the number of variables may be thousands of times more. These are not optimized overnight. It can take decades and thousands of engineers to gradually improve on existing designs to arrive at the current design.
