Psychoanalytic thinking in the community through Bick's observational method: a Work Discussion Seminar experience with care workers in a nursery

摘要

This paper describes the application of the observational method in the context of a nursery. It illustrates the value of the detailed observation of the baby's ways of relating to her carers and in so doing it highlights the unrivalled opportunity that psychoanalytic understanding brings to meet the carer's need to understand the emotional needs of the baby. This process is illustrated with the description of feeding and play situations of baby Iara and her ways of relating to members of staff during the morning and afternoon shifts.
