Globalization has made demand- and supply-planning management more complex and, in many cases, has reversed internal productivity gains made by manufacturers via technology and productivity improvements in the 1990s. Nonetheless, operating on a global scale remains a highly profitable business model for most manufacturers because doing so provides ongoing avenues to grow markets either geographically or through product differentiation; and affords many opportunities to maximize efficiencies through system-wide strategic and tactical planning.
