In line its preventive policy, the French steel Federation(FFA)has committed itself to a 15/100 reduction of CO_2 emissions and a 10/100 reduction of total emissions by the year 2000 based on 1990 figures. This voluntary agreement is representative of Usior's proactive approach to environmental protection, in the context of sustainable development. The story behind the signing of a voluntary agreement by the FAA, and the agreement's basic principles, are set out in this article, which also addresses additional ways of arriving at sustainable development that might be explored.
