In the spring of 1884, N. Keith, a chemist, who is recorded as the instigator of the initial efforts to form the American Institute of Electrical Engineering (AIEE), took the first step toward organizing a technical society to receive scholarly papers from foreign scientists. On 15 April of that year, a preliminary meeting was held in New York City, and an organizing committee was appointed. The committee included representatives of the telephone and telegraph companies as well as the fledgling electric light companies [1].
